elev8-galih › Schaffhausen
A generous apartment for six on Unterstadt, where the medieval quarter meets the Rhine and the fortress watches over the rooftops.
Unterstadt 15 sits on the lower town lane that runs parallel to the Rhine, in the dense fabric of Schaffhausen's listed Old Town.
An apartment on one of Schaffhausen's most storied streets
Unterstadt 15 sits on the lower town lane that runs parallel to the Rhine, in the dense fabric of Schaffhausen's listed Old Town. The building belongs to the layered architectural tradition of the region: thick masonry walls, generous ceiling heights, and windows that look out over a streetscape virtually unchanged for centuries. From the front door you are a few minutes' walk from the circular Munot fortress, the Rhine promenade, and the compact grid of lanes that make the Old Town one of the most intact medieval city centres in Switzerland.

The apartment has been fitted out by Elevate Schweiz GmbH with a practical, comfortable interior that does not compete with the character of the building. Warm tones, solid furnishings, and functional layouts across the living, dining, and sleeping areas give a group of up to six people genuine room to spread out. There is space to cook a proper meal, to sit around a table together, and to retire to separate bedrooms without the compromises typical of a city centre property of this size.
Schaffhausen itself is underappreciated. Most visitors come for the Rhine Falls — Europe's largest waterfall by volume, a fifteen-minute drive or train ride away — and leave without spending time in the city. Those who stay discover a centre full of oriel-windowed guild houses, independent wine bars, the Museum zu Allerheiligen with its Romanesque cloister, and a weekly market on Fronwagplatz. The Rhine path northward leads to Germany within a short cycle; the Swiss border town of Stein am Rhein is reachable by boat in summer.
Check-in is flexible and handled by Elevate Schweiz to make arrivals from Zurich Airport or Zurich main station — both roughly an hour away by train — straightforward. The apartment accommodates up to six guests, making it well suited to families, small groups of friends, or a combination of both. Quiet hours are observed in keeping with Swiss residential norms, and the building's historic setting means guests naturally settle into the unhurried pace that defines a stay in Schaffhausen.
Thick masonry walls, warm interiors, and a position in the Old Town that puts the Munot, the Rhine, and Schaffhausen's market squares within minutes on foot.
Fast and reliable wireless internet throughout the apartment, suitable for remote work, video calls, and streaming across multiple devices simultaneously.
Hob, oven, refrigerator, coffee maker, and complete cookware set. Counter space and storage sized for a group of six preparing meals from scratch.
In-apartment or building washing machine available for guest use, practical for stays of several days or longer journeys through Switzerland.
Climate control for warm summer months. Schaffhausen summers can be warm; the system keeps the apartment comfortable without relying on open windows alone.
Separate sleeping rooms for up to six guests, with quality linen and pillows provided. Rooms are individually furnished with storage and blackout capability.
Shower or bathtub with WC, washbasin, and towels provided. Additional WC within the apartment ensures no bottleneck for a larger group.
Large-screen smart TV with streaming app access. Connect your own accounts for films, series, or live sport during evenings in the apartment.
Unterstadt 15 is inside Schaffhausen's protected Old Town, within ten minutes' walk of the Munot, Rhine promenade, Fronwagplatz, and the main shopping lane.
Arrival and departure coordinated directly with Elevate Schweiz GmbH to accommodate train or flight schedules from Zurich, approximately one hour away.
The apartment is professionally cleaned and inspected between every stay. Fresh linen, towels, and bathroom supplies are provided at arrival.
A generously proportioned main room with solid flooring, a full sofa arrangement, and a dining table that seats the whole group. Natural light from the Unterstadt-facing windows fills the space through the day.
The largest sleeping room features a double bed with quality linen, a wardrobe with hanging and shelf space, and a quieter rear-facing aspect away from the street.
A well-proportioned second bedroom accommodating two guests, with built-in storage and access to natural light. Configured as needed for couples or individual travellers sharing.
The third room sleeps two on single beds, making it practical for children, teenagers, or two adults in a group requiring separate sleeping arrangements. Wardrobe and bedside storage included.
A fully equipped kitchen with hob, oven, refrigerator, and the tools needed to cook for six. Adequate counter space for meal preparation and storage for a multi-day stay.
A full bathroom with shower or bathtub, WC, and washbasin. Towels are provided. Additional WC facilities available within the apartment for a group of six.
You arrive on Unterstadt to the sound of the Rhine a block away and the Munot tower visible above the roofline. The apartment is on a lane where locals walk to the market and cyclists pass on their way to the river path. There is no resort lobby, no concierge desk — just a solid door, a key, and a space that is yours for the duration.
Mornings in the apartment are quiet. Light comes in from the street side early, and the kitchen is stocked with everything needed to make a proper breakfast before heading out. The Old Town is best before ten: the Vorstadt lanes, the oriel houses on Vordergasse, and the climb up to the Munot are all within ten minutes on foot, and the fortress terrace gives an unobstructed view over the Rhine and the rooftops below. On market days, Fronwagplatz fills with vegetable stalls and local producers — it is the right place to pick up something for dinner.
Afternoons branch in different directions depending on the group. The Rhine Falls at Neuhausen are close enough for a mid-afternoon excursion by regional train or bike. The Museum zu Allerheiligen, two minutes' walk from the apartment, holds a Romanesque cloister, a natural history collection, and temporary exhibitions that reward a slower visit. The Rhine promenade stretches east and west; in summer, locals swim from the banks downstream.
By evening the Old Town quiets. The wine bars and restaurants on Vorstadt and around Herrenacker square are a short walk, and the apartment's dining table is large enough for a meal cooked in. The Munot is lit after dark, visible from the street below. Schaffhausen at night is calm and unhurried — the kind of city where the day's pace follows you back to the apartment and makes sleep easy.

8 minutes by foot
A circular Renaissance fortress with a free-access tower terrace offering panoramic views over the Rhine, the Old Town rooftops, and the vineyards of the canton.

15 minutes by regional train
Europe's largest waterfall by volume, with boat tours, a midstream rock platform, and viewing terraces on both the Swiss and German banks.

4 minutes by foot
A Romanesque Benedictine cloister turned cultural museum holding cantonal history, natural history collections, and a rotating programme of art exhibitions. Free entry.

6 minutes by foot
The historic main square of Schaffhausen with a weekly farmers' market, fountain, surrounding guild facades, and independent cafes open from early morning.
Most visitors spend twenty minutes at the viewpoint and leave. Stay longer — take the boat to the midstream rock, walk the German bank, and time your visit for late afternoon when the light turns the water amber. Fifteen minutes from the apartment by train.
Vordergasse has the oriel windows everyone photographs, but the quieter lanes between Unterstadt and the Munot hill hold wine cellars, a Romanesque cloister, and a morning market square that locals have used for six hundred years.
The summer boat service from Schaffhausen to Stein am Rhein takes about ninety minutes each way along one of the most scenic stretches of the High Rhine. The medieval painted facades of Stein's Rathausplatz are worth the journey alone.
